Ball Ground got its name as it used to be the Cherokee’s playing fields for stick ball. The area’s large and flat fields and natural resources made it attractive for large groups of Native Americans. Ball Ground was incorporated in January of 1882. And at that time, consisted of little more than two country stores and a handful of houses. 1882 was also the year the Louisville & Nashville Railroad arrived due to the large marble-working industry nearby. The town quickly started to grow and has been growing ever since.
A.W. Roberts was involved in much of Ball Ground’s early development. He was a banker, real estate developer, cotton broker and creator of the Roberts Marble Company. The Roberts Store, which is now The Corner District, was founded by A.W. Roberts and served the town for eight decades. Our adjacent warehouse was actually once the trading post for cotton and other goods.
